About the Project

The My IG App was developed to support patients with immunodeficiency in managing their at-home infusions. Utilizing two years of existing research, we designed and tested a comprehensive digital solution incorporating advanced features such as voice integration and detailed infusion logging. The app aims to simplify medication management, enhance patient confidence, and improve overall treatment outcomes. This project underscores the impact of thoughtful UX design in healthcare applications.

Challenge

Complex Infusion Process

Patients with PID (a group of rare chronic disorders that affect the immune system) face complex and time-consuming IG infusions that are difficult to manage at home.

Limited Mobility Solutions

Many patients have limited mobility or dexterity, requiring an intuitive, accessible interface with voice integration.

Tracking and Logging

Patients need an efficient way to track medication inventory and log detailed infusion data to share with healthcare providers.

Scope of Work

To tackle these challenges, our scope of work included:

Structuring the research

  • Analyzed and consolidated the findings from the two years of research previously conducted by various research firms. The focus was on thoroughly understanding the audience by identifying key insights, trends, and patterns within the existing data. This structured approach formed the foundation for sketching and designing the project, ensuring that all creative decisions were informed by comprehensive and cohesive research. By effectively organizing the research, we streamlined the design process and aligned it closely with the needs and behaviors of the target audience.

Designing High-Fidelity Prototypes

  • Utilized the insights from the existing research to create high-fidelity prototypes. These detailed and interactive designs were developed to accurately represent the final product and were intended for user testing. The prototypes allowed us to validate design concepts, gather user feedback, and make necessary adjustments before moving forward with development. This approach ensured that the designs were user-centered and aligned with the research findings.

User Testing and Iteration

  • Conducted user testing with a group of 15-20 participants to evaluate the high-fidelity prototypes. Feedback from these sessions was carefully analyzed to identify areas for improvement. Based on the insights gathered, we iterated on the designs, refining them to better meet user needs and expectations. This iterative process ensured that the final designs were user-tested and optimized for the best possible user experience.

Launch and Design Handoff

  • In the final step, we received approval from stakeholders to proceed with the launch. The design assets were handed off to the development team, ensuring all necessary resources and documentation were provided for implementation. Throughout the development phase, we offered ongoing support to address any design-related questions or adjustments. This collaborative effort ensured a smooth transition from design to development, culminating in a successful product launch.

Solution

"As UX Lead, my objective was to design a patient-facing digital application to support at-home infusion care for patients with immunodeficiency. The project involved reviewing the design from other designers and working on complex features such as voice integration, infusion log, and inventory management. My main responsibilities were to prepare interview and usability test protocols, run the usability interviews, analyze the data, prioritize it, and work with product designers to reiterate on the initial design." - Ananga Thapaliya, Senior UI/UX Desinger

PID is a group of rare chronic disorders that affect the immune system. Patients with PID are more susceptible to infections, and many require regular infusions of immunoglobulin (IG) to boost their immunity. IG infusions can be time-consuming and complex, and they can be difficult to manage at home.

The My IG App provides a comprehensive solution for at-home infusion care.

The app includes features such as:

  • Medication management: The app helps patients and caregivers track their IG inventory, set reminders for upcoming infusions, and record infusion data.
  • Voice integration: The app allows patients to control the infusion process using voice commands, which can be helpful for patients with limited mobility or dexterity.
  • Infusion log: The app keeps a detailed log of all infusions, including the date, time, dose, and any side effects experienced. This information can be shared with healthcare providers to help them optimize treatment.
  • Inventory management: The app helps patients and caregivers track their IG inventory and ensure that they have enough medication on hand for upcoming infusions.
Usability Testing

The My IG App was subjected to multiple rounds of usability testing with patients and health care professionals. The feedback from these tests was used to iterate on the design and ensure that the app was easy to use and met the needs of its users.

The My IG App offers a user-friendly interface for managing at-home IG infusions, featuring medication management, voice integration, and detailed infusion logging. It has significantly improved patient confidence and competence in treatment management, as evidenced by a high System Usability Scale (SUS) score and positive user feedback.

The My IG App is a successful example of how UX design can be used to improve the quality of life for people with chronic health conditions. The app provides a comprehensive solution for at-home infusion care, and it has been shown to be effective in helping patients and caregivers manage their treatment more effectively and confidently.

Technologies We Use in This Project

Result

The My IG App is now available on the App Store and Play Store, enabling patients to successfully infuse at home. It has increased patient and caregiver confidence, reduced treatment attrition, and improved the quality of life for PID patients. This project demonstrates the power of user-centered design in creating effective healthcare solutions.
